After five years of estrangement, Saudi Arabia and Canada agreed yesterday, Wednesday, to restore diplomatic relations between them.
And the Kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the agreement stems mainly from the talks held by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum summit in Bangkok in November 2022. The statement said that “the desire of both parties is to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect and common interests. It has been decided to restore the level of diplomatic relations with Canada to its previous status.”
The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the agreement to restore relations to their previous state, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that each of the two countries would appoint an ambassador for the other. Ottawa named Jean-Philippe Lanto as its envoy to Riyadh.
